Anglers come from far and wide to Steep Point to try their luck at the most western point of the mainland.
A popular form of fishing here is "ballooning"where big baits are carried several hundred metres offshore by gas filled balloons.
This form of fishing, which has become hugely popular in the past 20 years, offers land based anglers a chance to catch the fish of a lifetime.
Spanish Mackerel are the main target, and some huge Spaniards have been taken this way, as have Cobia, Shark Mackerel, Tuna, Yellow tail Sea Kingfish .and big Sharks. Even Sailfish are abundant in these waters, and it is not uncommon for an angler to attract a crowd around him as a"Saily" puts on a spectacular show.
Steep Point is one of the few places in Western Australia where you can fish with the wind at your back on most days.
Steep Point actually faces North East, which means you can fish with a South Westerly wind, not many places in the country you can do this.
Spinning and Baitcasting for the species mentioned above is also very popular at Steep Point.
Other species such as Pink Snapper, Nor' west Snapper, and Mulloway, will often be caught on baits, especially in the evenings at the eastern end of the rocks where it is closer to the water level.
Don't forget to observe bag and size limits at all times and make sure to clean up your mess when you have finished fishing.
The Ranger frowns upon visitors that do not do the right thing, and you could be banned from visiting the Point again next time.
Pick up your old rotting bait, drink cans, fishing line, and plastic bags. It only takes a few minutes at the end of your stay to clean it up.
Not only is leaving your rubbish hazardous to other visitors and animals, including birds, but a fishing spot that looks and smells like a rubbish tip clearly detracts from the experience provided by Steep Point
An enviromental levy of $100.00 has been implemented at Steep Point to combat those that just wont do the right thing.
The Ranger will inspect your campsite upon your leaving the area and if you have left it, as you found it..you will be reimbursed your $100.00. If not...then you will forfeit the money.
It is unfortunate that these measures have had to be adopted but as always...a selfish few spoil it for the rest of us.
