Q: Where exactly is Steep Point? A: Looking at a map of Western Australia, along the coast below Carnarvon, you will see the most westerly point, out from Shark Bay called Steep Point. Located a short distance from Shark Bay, between Dirk Hartog Island and Useless Loop, Steep Point is the western-most point on the Australian mainland. Steep Point can be reached by following the Useless Loop road on Edel Land, and offers spectacular coastal scenery. First named by Vlamingh in 1697 as "Steyle Hock" (Translation: Steep Point), the location was later similarly called Point Escarpee (L. Freycinet, 1801) and Steep Point (P. King, 1822). Q: Do I need a 4WD to get to Steep Point? A: Yes. A well maintained 4WD is necessary to get to Steep Point. It is a fairly good track into the area. The corrugation can be bad sometimes. Just take your time, let your tyre's down to at least 20psi when you get to the Windmill on the main track and all should be well. By not letting your tyre's down, it makes it hard on your vehicle, and causes damage to the track for the people traveling behind you. If water is on tracks, do not try to drive around the water, drive through the middle. Many a vehicle has been bogged trying to skirt around the water. Q: Who now manages the Steep Point area? A: The Steep Point / Edel Land area is now managed by the Department of Environment and Conservation. DEC rangers are located onsite to manage and maintain the area. Q: Do I need to book in advance or get a permit before visting Steep Point? A: Entry and camping fee's apply. Anyone wishing to make an overnight stay in the Edel Land / Steep Point area ( including False Entrance ) will need a permit before before arriving ( permit request at the bottom of this page ) More information on fee's and charges can be found below. Q: What do I need to bring with me when visiting Steep Point? A: You need to bring everything with you. Your Entry Permit. Fuel, Food, Water, Generators, Freezers, All fishing tackle, line, sinkers, bait, etc. There is no Garage/shop for over 100 km's so be sure to bring everything you may need. Q: Can I get Fuel at Steep Point? A: No, all fuels for all vehicles, petrol or diesel must be brought in with you. The Ranger is not licensed to carry any fuels. Q: Is there a Telephone at Steep Point? A: No, the public telephone box that was situated near the Rangers residence has been removed by Telstra. Since the Next G network was introduced by Telstra in 2007/8 the telephone coverage on your mobile phone is quite sufficiant. The required entry permit stipulates you must carry a mobile phone in your group. There is a phone at the Rangers residence for emergencies. Q: Are there ablution blocks at Steep Point? A: No. There are Toilet facilities at the main camping area, along the beach before you actually get to the Point. There are two dry Toilets at the point itself. Camp showers, and water for the showers, must be brought in. Q: Can I buy bait and fishing tackle at Steep Point. A: No. Sometimes the Ranger has spare bait, but it is a good idea to bring more than enough with you. Q: When is the best time to visit Steep Point. A: The Scenery is worth the drive at any time of the year but, strong SW winds are common from November through to April. ("Fisher persons please note.") South westerly winds are ideal for fishing, and particularly balloon fishing at Steep Point. Q: Is there a Doctor at Steep Point. A: No. The nearest Doctor is at Carnarvon. Ensure you are carrying a well stocked First aid kit, and First aid book. These are required items listed in the Entry Permit for Steep Point Contact the Ranger if any emergency arises.
